Performing Arts

Drama, Theater, Musicals, Instruments

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy that is transformed through you to action…and if you block it…it will be lost forever.”

~Martha Graham~

I like creating art, but I also like performing!  One of the things I like about my school is that we get a chance to do a lot of public speaking.  A lot of our academic work is about presenting what we’ve learned to an audience.  That is why I think that public speaking is one of my strengths now.

Here are two small examples from when I was in first grade.  In the first photo (left) I am presenting as President Calvin Coolidge and pretending to be him to demonstrate what I have learned about him and his presidency.  In the second photo (right) I am running for President of First Grade and I had to make a campaign slogan, campaign poster, and write and deliver a speech on why I was a good candidate to vote for as President.

Performing, then, is an everyday part of my development and it is something I like a lot!

Below are some of the ways that I do performance art, which includes theater and drama, dance, and music (vocal and instrumental).

Dance

I have always loved dancing since I was a young girl.

I started taking professional dance classes when I was in preschool with Michelle Baker’s Webby Dance Company.  I had lots of chances to perform.

Next, in early elementary school, I joined En Pointe in Long Beach and danced there for two years.  I took both ballet and modern dance.

When I was just a first grader I decided I wanted to be in my school’s talent show and that I would dance a solo performance of Sia’s Chandelier.  I was just six years old and I did everything all by myself.  What do you think of it?

Theater & Drama

I have been lucky to be in plays at school and I liked it enough that I decided to audition for roles in The Kids Theater Company (TKTC) in Long Beach.  All of the plays I have been in were musicals where I had to both act and sing.  I also have done The Young Americans Camp twice and I have had a solo in their huge end-of-the-summer performance.

I made my theater debut in 2015 as a member of The Rose Buds (even though I was the only daisy!) in the school production of Alice Rocks Wonderland.

The next year in 2016 I was Coral the Mermaid in TKTC’s production of The Little Mermaid.

In 2017 I had a role as Lucinda the Devil in TKTC’s production of Hocus Pocus.

The Young Americans is a non-profit organization and performing group in Southern California.  First founded in 1962, the group is credited with being the first show choir in America, mixing choreography with choral singing.  Good friends of our family - Bill & Robin Brawley - are the backbone of The Young Americans.  Bill is the Chief Artistic Officer and Robin is the Director and Choreographer.  I have participated in two summer performing arts camps.

In 2019, when I was in fourth grade, our school did a production of Shrek and I had the role of Cinderella.  I also had a solo in this production.
